The fluorescent lights flickered once, twice, and then held steady, casting a sterile, humming glow over the room. This wasn't on the blueprints.
The Discovery
The door didn't exist a moment ago.
You had been leaning against the basement wall of the abandoned Blackwood Institute, catching your breath after dodging a collapsing floorboard. Your hand pressed against the damp concrete, and with a sickening grind of gears that hadn't moved in forty years, the wall pivoted inward.
The air that rushed out didn't smell like dust or mildew. It smelled sharp and metallic—ozone and sterilized copper.
The Setting
You step inside. The room is a perfect contrast to the rotting building above. While the Institute is crumbling brick and water damage, this place is hermetically sealed steel and glass.
Visuals:
- The Lighting: Banks of LED strips run along the floor, illuminating the room in a pale, clinical blue.
- The Tanks: Three massive glass cylinders dominate the center of the room. They are filled with a viscous, clear fluid. Inside, something floats—too humanoid to be animal, too distorted to be human.
- The Desks: Workstations are frozen in time. A coffee mug sits on a coaster, the liquid inside long since evaporated into a brown stain. Papers are scattered everywhere, covered in frantic handwriting and complex molecular diagrams.
Sounds:
- The low, thrumming vibration of a generator that shouldn't still have fuel.
- The rhythmic drip-drip-drip of condensation falling from a leaking coolant pipe.
- A soft, electronic chirping coming from a server bank in the corner.
The Mystery: On the main desk, a computer terminal is still glowing. A cursor blinks on a command line:
// SYSTEM ALERT: CONTAINMENT INTEGRITY AT 84%. INITIATE PROTOCOL OMEGA? (Y/N)
In the corner, a heavy blast door is sealed shut, welded from the inside. Scorch marks radiate outward from the seams.
Whatever they were working on down here, they tried very hard to make sure it never left. But the question remains: Did they succeed? Or are you currently standing inside the cage with it?
